I imagine so. There's a definite sense in accounts from the early days of Western Canadian settlement that once you'd moved in, you almost had an obligation to see it all through, whether it was because you couldn't afford to move on, or because you'd made your choice, and now you had to live with it.

But there is a clear sense here of a man who's almost forgotten what it is to be human, to be happy
