The Basics

Title: The Basics
Author: [livejournal.com profile] helena_s_renn
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Prompt(s): #18: a picture of a sunset on the coast
Disclaimer: As always, this is fiction. It never happened.
Summary: The end of the world....
Author's Note: Drabble. I don't count a/an as a word.

Midnight sun. Sean kept his eyes to the worn boards under his feet, familiar now. Tomorrow, they could pick the ripening ground-hugging blueberries. Viggo's secret cabin, his grandmother's birthplace, felt like home to him after the last two months here. Fading paint matched sky; water, smooth as glass, pure as primeval crystal. They'd been reflected upon it in pure form, too.

Each fortnight a bush plane flew in with supplies. Otherwise, it was only them.

They made do with: Minimal furniture.
Basic foods.
Kerosene lighting and heating.
A few well-loved books.
Conversation.
No technology.
Long walks.
And lots and lots of sex.

I especially love the stylistic differences between the two sections and how they become one at the end. Besides, I am sure Alex is correct in her assesment ;)

yeah, i think so, too. i'm not that much of a drabble writer but always like the challenge of fitting the whole concept into X number of words, so thanks for the comment on the stylistic approach as well.

A famous art critic once said: “The sum is more than the addition of its parts.” Fits here perfectly.

thank you. ... and the pic helped to, i think. plus vig and bean. i appreciate the comment.

I like the list-like structure of the last bit. Very fitting! Thanks for sharing!

you're welcome, and thanks for the f/b. it seems like i'm always making lists within the text, so might as well format it as one... :D

I love how you've captured that sense of alone (but not lonely) and stillness. Really nice.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
thank you. the boys deserve some alone time to themselves. it would both relaxing and fulfilling at the same time.

A complete and magical world created with such few words. Fine writing, lovely.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
the locale in the pic looked purely magical to me, as well. i wanted to go there and just be there... and i think the guys would feel the same. thank you.

Oh, I love the structure of this. It's a small wee piece, but feels so complete. It made me smile. Thank you for sharing it.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
you're very welcome, and thanks again for commenting. it's really nice to hear things like 'made me smile'. lots of moments to be had. and here's one.

This presents such a happy and quiet image. Purely them in their own world. A lovely story.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
thanks for that. the pic was so calm and otherworldly, immediately i wanted them there in it.

[identity profile] mooms.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This really made me smile and left me feeling very happy and satisfied. I love the way that they are sufficient in each other.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
even with only basic living conditions, they have enough, together (and as you said it, which is lovely). thanks very, very much.

[identity profile] savageseraph.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I love how the simple things are what makes their lives so satisfying.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
i wished i had time/room to list more of these things, but it's enough to make the picture. thanks again for the comment.

Fading paint matched sky; water, smooth as glass, pure as primeval crystal.
An absolutely beautiful line in a lovely piece.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-07-07 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much. That was actually the only line that I agonized over. The pic is so pure as is, how does a person put that into words?? Thank you (again).

[identity profile] stormatdusk.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
oh man, i so want this to be real. somewhere in my mind, it is now, thanks to you.

[identity profile] helena-s-renn.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
