This is a scene imbued with real power coming from the skillful way that the writer tracks Boromir's shifting thoughts and emotions, all the hopes and fears pulling at him, tearing at the shell he has put about himself which is a mix of his own pride and doubt and the expectations of father and people. The tension builds towards a violence he has not, for all his suspicions, expected from Aragorn and then, for a few precious moments he almost begins to believe that there might be another way that would not place him in opposition to the Ranger, but the moment is lost because it could not survive discovery then and he is left to collect himself as best he can, little knowing that he has set himself on a doomed path. The language is plain, no over-elaboration to distract from the moment, matching the energy of the action with the writing. Thankyou very much indeed. This was a splendid gift. *hugs*
ETA: Thankyou so much, Galadriel. I'm touched that with so much happening in RL you should have taken time to imagine and write this - such a strong scene, filled with emotions, some overwhelming and others small jags to the conscience. It is a real treat. *g*
