This is very atmospheric, the initial luxurious prison and Odysseus' vague sense of unease, drowning in languor; the veil of contentment torn apart by Lucifer's appearance and with him, all the incarnations of lovers to torture him, but only one to love. Then at the end he is cast forth, perhaps because he has had the temerity to love and becomes the 'first' of his own list of characters.
