Title: Fidelity

Prompt(s): #20: trust, "stirring the concentric circles" and a picture of Fidel's
Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. It's make believe and completely untrue.

Sitting alone in the dark, cool, leafy courtyard at Fidel's in Wellington, Viggo drops a sugar cube into the strong Havana coffee, stirring the concentric circles and brooding.

Aragorn needs to gain Boromir's trust, because with that trust will come fidelity. How bitter a draught that in the very moment Aragorn will gain both trust and allegiance, he will lose Boromir for ever.

Blinking back sudden tears, Viggo looks up to see his Faithful Jewel finally approaching the table, his smile a shaft of sunlight slicing through the gloom.

"Trust you to be early the one time I am late!"

There's a balance between the over-arching mismatched timing, Aragorn's need to Boromir fidelity, the unspoken and upcoming loss of his friend that your Viggo can see on the horizon and the everyday missed appointment. They can catch up with the last, small, moment in the cafe, but they cannot make the other things right. thanks for posting.

*G* Oh, this is nice. You really get a sense of Viggo's surroundings, and I do love the reflection on Aragorn and Boromir's relationship, and how poignant it is. *siiiigh* I love how Viggo lets Boromir leak into how he views Sean, his "faithful jewel," and I adore the lovely note of joy it ends on. Wonderful!

Oh my goodness, and I can't believe I missed what Alex pointed out above: the mirroring of Aragorn losing Boromir the moment he gains his trust, and the slightly out-of-synch timing of Sean and Viggo's meetup. That's perfect! I love it.

Wow. That was perfectly balanced, and it broke my heart a little.

Thank you so much. The lines between Viggo and Aragorn were often blurred, I think. :)

This fic just works soooo well. I love how the details from the world of the films ripple out into the characters' world, intensifying and adding to the events there.

I like the contrast of Viggo thinking about ancient things like Boromir and Aragorn, and Sean being so modern, with a joke.

The poetry was lovely - and I really liked your incorporation of the concentric circles as a sort of 'brooding' aid.

I think what I love the most is the underlying sense of loss Viggo is feeling about the prospect of Sean leaving New Zealand. I love that. And calling him his 'Faithful Jewel' is beautiful.

Beautiful *sniffs* Such a touching moment, that Viggo is feeling mournful and Sean arrives, smiling and with such a lighthearted comment.

Thank you. Viggo is a little given to melancholy introspection! Sorry it has taken me such a long time to catch up with comments. :)

isn't that just like life, when people's moods are so different in the same moment, both coming at it from very different perspectives. sean's appearance, all happy and smiling, was almost like the proverbial blade of a knife into 'aragorn's' reflections.

this is deceptively brief but so very thought-provoking. bittersweet, despite or maybe even moreso because of sean's cheerful mood. *sigh...*
